The Traditional Owners Reference Group directs the development
of a Regional Management Plan for the region's Aboriginal Fish traps. Aboriginal people are recording
the cultural attributes of the Stone Fish Traps and are undertaking
an inventory of those that remain whilst identifiying processes to
repair and protect them from damage. Our region has challenging
environmental conditions with up to 6 meters tidal variation. This
tidal force has the potential to damage the remaining
artifacts. The designs of those traps which have worked most
effectively are to be protected and used as on-site working
models.
Traditional Knowledge
Recording Project:
Cultural Knowledge is valuable-to be kept for future
generations. This project recognizes the value of Indigenous
people’s natural resource
managment knowledge.
Aboriginal people are recording their valuable cultural information
so as to document the relationship that Aboriginal people have
sustained with the environment as long-term custodians of the
land.
Our Aboriginal Land Management Facilitator coordinates the
Traditional Knowledge Recording project in this region. Traditional
Owners from this region will lead and participate in the
project.
Caring for Country principles are the foundation of
the project which records these principles of Aboriginal
custodianship and the cultural use of natural resources for future
generations.
