A Platypus with a Future !
|
Broken River -a picturesque river in the headwaters of the
Burdekin Catchment in Central Queensland - passes through Eungella
National Park and is renowned for it's local Platypus who attract
many tourists to viewing platforms along it's reaches. This river
system also supports the endangered, Eungella Day Frog, the
Eungella Honeyeater, and some endemic invertebrates.
Declines in water quality threaten these tourism values. Poor water
quality has been exacerbated by low flows, algal blooms and faecal
coliform levels which exceed those set for safe swimming.
Mackay Whitsunday Natural Resource Management Group's Flagship
Scheme- Sustainable Landscapes will guide project
investment through the strategic partnerships the group is
building with others to implement actions which will
‘fix’ Broken River’.
50 landholders and around 3000 head of cattle populate the Broken
River Catchment
A group of Platypus Futures project partners has been
formed.
It includes - the Mirani Shire, Queensland Parks & Wildlife
Service, the Environmental Protection Authority, and the Burdekin
Dry Topics NRM Group. Working with resource users, this partnership
group will promote best practice and conservation of the river
system with other key stakeholders.
Approaches being used to reduce the impacts on the water and
biodiversity resource condition and to promote the adoption of best
practice land management include- community consultation, education
and training , as well as the engagement of landholders in projects
for the adoption of water use efficiencies, fencing of waterways,
riverbank revegetation and erosion control.
